We run races for cruisers, dinghies and catamarans. Many members choose to sail for pleaseure during the races. The race times are contained in the club handbook and on this web site
The cruisers are split into class 1, which race with IRC handicaps and class 2, which race with RYA PY handicaps. The races normally start from the club line. However, in 2004 there will be a series of races started from the marina. These races are held either in the bay or further a field into the Bristol Channel, dependent on the weather conditions.
The catamarans and dinghies share a common race programme and start line, in three fleets with the courses set to accommodate the speed differential between the different boats types. The racing is within the confines of the bay. During the Winter series and usually during the Saturday series, racing is started from the roof while at other times racing is sometimes started from the club committee boat, Kestrel. These can be massed started or have separate starts at the discretion of the OOD. The races positions are calculated based on elapsed time per lap.
The catamarans have the larger courses and are a handicap fleet racing off ISAF SCHRS. There is a growing number of F18, F16 and one-design Dart 18 classes.
The dinghy fleet, (RYA PY <1200), sail as a handicap fleet racing off RYA PY handicaps. If you have any dinghy at Mumbles you are welcome to join the racing. There is a growing fleet of Lasers, Laser radials, GP14s and Scorpions, all of which sail off similar handicaps giving close racing.
There is also a slow handicap fleet (RYA PY> 1200). This has been established to enable shorter length courses to be set that are better suited to Optimists, Toppers and Mirrors. This fleet is intended to provide a transition, particularly for junior members, from training into club racing.
The club is encouraging the growth of class racing, both in the Catamarans and the dinghies.
See the page for fleet representatives.
